Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Ray moved to Rockwall, Texas in 1999. He attended Rockwall High School where he played football and was a member of the two-time Texas State Championship Wrestling team. After graduating in 2002, Ray attended the University of Missouri, where he wrestled as a recruited walk-on for two seasons.
